A Beginner's Guide to Google Business Profile Optimization

For most local businesses, Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business) is the single highest-leverage thing you can optimize — it's often the first thing a prospective customer sees, before they even click through to your website.

Step 1: Claim and Verify Your Listing

If you haven't already, search for your business on Google Maps. If a listing exists but is unclaimed, claim it. If none exists, create one. Verification typically happens by postcard, phone or email, depending on your business type and location.

Step 2: Choose Your Categories Carefully

You get one primary category and several secondary categories. The primary category has an outsized effect on which searches you appear for — choose the most accurate, specific option available rather than a broad, generic one.

Step 3: Fill In Every Field Completely

An incomplete profile signals lower quality. Make sure you've filled in:

  • Business hours (including holiday hours when relevant)
  • Full address and service area (if you serve customers at their location)
  • Phone number and website
  • A complete, keyword-natural business description
  • Attributes (wheelchair accessible, women-led, outdoor seating, etc. — whatever genuinely applies)

Step 4: Add Real Photos, Regularly

Profiles with recent, genuine photos of your actual location, products or team tend to perform better than those with stock images or none. Add new photos periodically rather than a single batch and never again.

Step 5: Set Up a Review Strategy

Reviews influence both your ranking in the local map pack and a prospective customer's decision to choose you. Make it easy for satisfied customers to leave a review (a direct link helps), and respond to every review — positive and negative — professionally and promptly.

Step 6: Use Posts and Updates

Google Business Profile lets you publish short posts — offers, events, new products, updates. These keep your profile active and give search engines fresh signals that your business is genuinely operating and engaged.

Step 7: Monitor Your Insights

Your profile's Insights tab shows how customers found you, what they searched, and what actions they took (calls, direction requests, website clicks). Use this to see what's actually working, not just guess.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Keyword-stuffing your business name (e.g. "ABC Dental — Best Dentist in Mumbai") — this violates Google's guidelines and risks suspension
  • Leaving hours outdated, especially around holidays — customers who show up to a closed business rarely come back
  • Ignoring negative reviews instead of responding professionally
  • Using a virtual office or PO box address for a service-area business that doesn't see customers at that location

This Takes an Hour, Not a Redesign

Unlike a website overhaul, most of Google Business Profile optimization can be done in a single sitting. It's one of the few genuinely high-impact, low-effort marketing tasks available to any local business — which is exactly why it's worth doing properly.
