Shopify vs WooCommerce: Which E-commerce Platform Is Right for You?

Growth Hub Media Team22 April 2026 2 min read

This is the first real decision most new e-commerce businesses face, and it shapes almost everything downstream — cost structure, flexibility, and how much technical work falls on you versus a managed platform.

Shopify: Managed, Predictable, Less Technical

Shopify is a fully hosted platform — you don't manage servers, security patches or backups. Everything runs through a monthly subscription plus transaction fees (unless you use Shopify Payments).

Choose Shopify if:

  • You want to focus on running the business, not managing infrastructure
  • You're comfortable with a predictable monthly cost plus transaction fees
  • You want a large, well-supported app ecosystem for extending functionality
  • You expect to scale quickly and want a platform that handles traffic spikes without your intervention

The trade-off: less control over hosting and some technical customization, and ongoing platform fees that scale with your business.

WooCommerce: Full Control, More Responsibility

WooCommerce is a WordPress plugin — it turns your WordPress site into a store, but you own and manage the hosting.

Choose WooCommerce if:

  • You want full control over hosting, data and customization
  • You want to avoid an ongoing platform subscription (though you'll still pay for hosting)
  • You already have a WordPress site and want to add e-commerce to it
  • Your team (or agency) is comfortable managing WordPress maintenance, security and updates

The trade-off: you're responsible for hosting, security and performance — WooCommerce doesn't handle traffic spikes automatically the way Shopify's infrastructure does.

Cost Comparison, Realistically

Shopify's costs are more predictable — a monthly plan plus a small percentage per transaction. WooCommerce's sticker price looks lower (no core platform fee), but hosting, security plugins, backup services and maintenance add up, and often land in a similar range once you account for everything.

What About Catalog Size and Complexity?

Both platforms handle large catalogs well with the right setup. Shopify scales more predictably out of the box; WooCommerce can scale just as far but needs more deliberate hosting and caching decisions as your catalog and traffic grow.

Our Honest Take

For a business that wants to launch fast and not think about infrastructure, Shopify is usually the better starting point. For a business that already has WordPress expertise, wants maximum long-term control, or has very specific customization needs that off-the-shelf Shopify apps don't cover well, WooCommerce is often the stronger fit.

There's no universally "better" platform — only a better fit for your specific situation, team and goals. If you want a recommendation specific to your catalog and business model, get in touch and we'll walk through it with you before you commit to either.
